The least funny funky five ever...

but the most colorful. Here Dave Richard makes his appearance, topless, no less. It is gross.

Funky Five #14

6.18.2006

#13 was done for Rosie's 19th birthday- and it is the first place Josh Tate showed up. Mark Reed, Rosie's ex, appears again (he was Playboy in the "last" Funky Five episode, or the first, whatever.)
Weirdman's girlfriend is based loosely on what I knew about his girlfriend at the time, who had a name like Chantilly, but I guessed mosly. Okirami and Alternative Girl's boys are totally fictional.
The bedrooms at the end are based on our actual rooms, as they were in high school. Rosie and I didn't share a room, much less have a bunkbed, but we did have flowery bedspreads. I think Kristy Lewis's room is the least exact, but it still has the feeling of her room to me.

Funky Five #13

This was written as a birthday gift for Rosie in 1997, I believe. I am wearing my boyfriend Josh's soccer jersey that he gave me in real life- I usually put people in clothing they actually own.
Rosie, to my knowledge, has never owned a red bikini, nor has Lisa owned a yellow one.
Glenn probably owns a pink tutu.

Funky Five #12

6.13.2006

Hutch is up to his old tricks again...and I brought in Juniper- who is modeled after Rosie's high school friend Nicole Perez, also known as "good Nicole," who I thought was super-cool.
I am guessing that this was written in high school- possibly my senior year, but I have no idea. Chelsea Clinton makes an appearance, which would be true to the times, as I had a strange interest in Chelsea Clinton toward the end of high school and into college. It was fueled by an article in a magazine that had top designers designing dresses just for her, and being the fashionista I am, I was intrigued.
It was weird, and I am better now, okay?
I enjoyed switching up the costumes...and I just now notice that one of the "goons" looks like my sister's boyfriend, Justin.
If you find him, I'll draw YOU in a comic.

Episode #11 (This Funky Five Episode was formatted to fit a folder.)

6.12.2006

This is my favorite comic. I love Weirdman at the end- "You and I- we are brothers." I am SOOO funny.

Episode #10

Two of my best friends are introduced in this comic- Lisa Richard became the next Funky Five Superhero, and Paul Hutchins is Hutch, the biggest bad guy. I don't know why I made Paul a bad guy, except that I didn't want to draw him in a bathing suit...and boys are gross.
I had an especially hard time naming Lisa. when I originally came up with names for people with Glenn, it was easy, and they weren't really meant to be kind. Its hard to label someone as something and not have it be insulting.

The Funky Four?! Episode #9

I brought in our friends from church, Jason Leon and David Cory. I don't know why I made them so strange...well, maybe I know why I made Jason so strange, but D.C. totally doesn't deserve it.
Rosie helped me "ink" a lot of these pages, so the writing looks weird, and the pictures definitely have a different feel.
In the bank scene, the two wannabes are talking to a jad plant, using that old McCarthy sound byte that they used to play on KROQ..."Are you a Communist?"

Episode #4

Episode #something or other

Yes, I was an overdramatic teenage girl.

Josh Tate, why didn't you write Sarah Paulson MORE? Good thing I was so easy for Josh to snag.

The loss of Shopper Girl

Ellie Halloran, who was Shopper Girl, had been living far away for a long time before I drew this comic, and it was written just to show her leaving. I made it as nice as possible for her- although I don't think the reality of her leaving was very pleasant at all.
It was sad to write. Now Ellie has a lovely son and lives in Florida. Stripper Chick has kept in contact with her, so ask Rosie for more details.

Episode #6 is about my ex-boyfriend Ryan Stanley. I wrote it before we began dating, at his request, but he did not like the end product. I'm not very flattering to him in it, and it makes me wonder why I ever went out with him in the first place.

The Funky Five Episode #6 (Attack of the Tall)

I have no idea what made me write another Funky Five episode.
Maybe it was how sad Rosie was about it ending.
Maybe it was how upset Kristy was at being lost.
Maybe it was that Glenn wrote me and apologized, and we were again friends.
Maybe I didn't care about the teenie-bopper breakup because I was in love with Josh Tate....

Top Secret Funky Five Episode (#5)

6.04.2006

Do you remember 1994? Looking back, it was an excellent year, but at the time I drew this weird little comic, I was recovering from a teenie-bopper break-up.

Let me explain.

I had a boyfriend, named Glenn Wellman. We met at Camp Maranatha Family Camp in 1992, and for some reason, I called him Weirdman...well, he was weird. He called me Heftywoman, and my sister, Rosie, Stripper Chick. I have no idea where Stripper Chick came from, but it stuck.
We would write letters, and I would draw strange comics for him, thus the episode four. In the summer of 1994, however, he stopped returning my letters.

"Weird." I thought.

Glenn had found another girlfriend while working on staff at Camp, and when I came up for Family Camp that year, I discovered this. So I killed off the Funky Five. Hula Lady represents Christina Hogan, the unwitting replacement of me. (It wasn't a bad thing...that summer I met Josh, and had I been my normal bubbly self, he probably would have been horrified and we never would have ended up how we have.)
Shopper Girl was our friend Ellie Halloran, who met this boy named Mark at her homeschool group and kind of dumped my sister and I for him. Model Babe is our friend Kristy Lewis, who did not get lost, but I had to end the group.
Why start with the "last episode?" I wrote another eleven comics after this one- the last one while I was pregnant with Bowden in 2003.

I feel like a blog is the perfect place for these things. I have a strange attachment to them, and they sometimes echo what was happening in my life at the time, and once or twice I am actually funny. These will mostly go up for Rosie and me. I hope others get some pleasure out of them, they took forever to scan in...
